SCHOOL REGION INFORMATION

A brief word about District Reorganization 2003...

With control of the New York City School System now under the Mayor's Office & Chancellor Joel Klein, Community School Districts 13,14,15,16 have been combined and are now collectively known as Region 8. Regional offices are known as Learning Support Centers.

Last February Chancellor Klein released a List of Schools which were exempted from implementing any curriculum changes - subject to a few last minute additions. As you can see by the list many of our neighborhood's schools in former District 15 already met the Mayor's Guidelines. In the meantime check the NYC Department of Education Website for the latest updates as well as the "Children First Agenda" where you will find an ongoing schedule of Public Hearings as to what works in education.

The administrator of Region 8 is Dr. Marcia Lyles. There will be10 Instructional Supervisors who will monitor 10-12 schools each. Some kind of parent board, depending on the NY State legislature, will be formed in each community school district. There will be 32 parent boards.

SmallTown Brooklyn Notes...

About Our School Districts...

Small Town Brooklyn was predominately located within the old School District 15 boundaries (see below). However a small portion of Northern Brooklyn Heights as well as Northern Park Slope fell under the jurisdiction of School District District 13. As of Fall 2003,

Public High Schools
are now be administrated by the Learning Regions in which they are located - in our case Region 8. Many parents will still be able to take advantage of City Wide High Schools, some of the best right here in Brooklyn
